One of my nephews texted me this afternoon that he has seen my sister and she was in good spirits, smiling and looking forward to her lunch.

Not me, but a good representation of the look on my face while reading my nephew’s text.
See this post if you wonder why I’m surprised.
So the “scoop” (as my family likes to call news) is that the wing my sister is in is now (obviously) open to visitors. My brother-in-law and one of my nephews have seen her. She does have a UTI again, and it is being treated. (She had one a few weeks ago and, frankly, I can’t believe she would have developed another UTI if the staff were doing their job. Just sayin’.)
She still has some cognitive issues, possibly due to Parkinson’s, although dehydration and UTIs can also muddle the mind. This is why it’s so important that my sister’s husband and sons visit her: to be sure she is getting fluids and food and the attention she needs to assure her recovery.
So thank you all for your positive thoughts and prayers, your kind words and support. I imagine my sister is “not out of the woods yet” (another favorite saying in my family), but every day that goes by is one more day closer to her going home.

Thank you <3. We're still taking things one day at a time, but as long as she can have visitors, I'm confident she'll continue to improve.

Wonderful news, Marie! 💙 Happy dance here, too. I’m so glad your sister can have visitors now–that makes such a difference in her care and for her spirits.

Thank you, Merril! Yes, indeed. My sister is quite social so having visitors really contributes to her mental health.

I think even people who aren’t particularly social need some visitors/attention in a situation like that where all the days run together, and you’re uncomfortable, away from home, etc.

Yes. When I was 23, I had to be hospitalized for 6 weeks. It was all well and good when all I wanted to do was sleep, but as I got better, I needed distractions. The best sort were visitors :-)

What a peaceful backyard! My family also uses that expression a lot. And I agree she’s probably not out of the woods yet. But the better times can be cherished, and this post does that. Dehyration is awful for older people. Even the older people at my house. It’s been so hot that I think both the gardener and I suffered from dehydration and it gives us vertigo. That’s how we know. Anyway, I am glad she’s feeling better now, and I hope she can continue to feel better. But the only way in a home or a hospital is if someone is there regularly overseeing the care. It’s just the way it is. My best to her and to you XOXO.

Thank you, Luanne! I suspect that she never fully recovered from her first UTI and got dehydrated on that top of that. But now at least her family can be checking on her and her care. xoxo

Every little bit forward is a good bit! Happy to hear that she is on the proper road and that she can now have visitors to ensure proper treatment (which is a whole ‘nother thing but I shall not harp on that!)

So glad to read this good news. Sounds like you have a solid handle on the facts surrounding UTIs, dementia, confusion, etc. Take care of that sister and yourself.
