Do you like having garage sales? Or going to them? If yes to either question, then read on for John Howell’s tips on what not to do when having a garage sale. You might even share some of your own horror stories :)
Top Ten Things Not to Do When Having a garage Sale.
This list was inspired by a recent weekend of visiting a number of garage sales in the search of nautical artifacts that were supposed to be available in different locations.
10 If you have a garage sale, do not stock the inventory with all junk. If you do, at best you will look like you are down and out. At worst, you won’t make many sales since everyone has enough junk that looks and smells like yours at home.If you have a garage sale, do not advertise items that you don’t intend to sell. If you do, at best you can tell the folks the item is already sold. At

I missed being able to reblog John Howell’s Monday list of Top Ten Things Not To Do while I was on vacation. Well, if you ever engage in home improvement activities, this list is for you!
It’s that time of the year again when certain outdoor chores have to be done in preparation for the coming change of seasons. The weather is finally turning a little cooler so the projects put off because of the heat can now be done. This list has been inspired by all the times I have not paid attention to the Top Ten Things Not to do While Doing Outdoor Work and is the 63rd edition
The Top Ten Things Not to Do While Working Outdoors
10 If you need to fix or waterproof your outdoor deck, do not start the work after noon. If you do, at best you will have to work past dinner. At worst, you will quit the project only to find yourself doing the work in the snow.
9 If you need to go up on a ladder for anything, do not ask your spouse…
I am back from vacation (and already having problems with WordPress but that’s another post). And I’m still on hiatus from blogging as I (grudgingly) resume the daily grind. But when I saw this post from Cate Russell-Cole, I had to break my silence.
It chills me that we might have lost Cate this summer. I knew she was in pain, but I never knew how bad it was. I am grateful that she was able to get help and she is still with us, and I hope she will be for a long, long time.
I’ve had times when I considered suicide, although for lesser reasons than Cate. During a period when I had free access to drugs and alcohol, I leaned toward the “accidental” suicide approach, but I was never “successful.” And to use Cate’s own words, this is why I’m glad I never was successful: “If I had taken my life when I first considered it, I would have missed out on getting married, great jobs, knowing and loving some awesome people and so very much more.”
If those attempts had been successful, I would have missed out on meeting my husband which means I would have missed out on celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I would have missed gazing up at the wonder of the Milky Way as it came to life over Mono Lake. I would have missed hiking up through the cinder and ash of Black Point. I would have missed days of talking and laughing with our friends of 30+ years. I would have missed the seediness of San Francisco as well as its glory. I would have missed coming home and holding each of our cats although none of them like to be held. I would have missed my husband who is my anchor in all things at all times. I would have missed each of you. Cate is right. Life does get better. Hang in there and reach out.

If you recall, last week I posted a story, or rather, memoir, of a young woman wondering whether to send a letter. If you missed it, you can read it here. I’ll wait.
Twenty-five years ago, on August 21, the letter writer and the presumed letter recipient married in a small town in California. (more…)
I am not a classic hoarder. You don’t have to navigate through narrow alleyways of towering books, magazines and newspapers to find my bathroom, or my kitchen, or me. I do love books and have far more than I will ever read, and I keep them properly in bookcases (for the most part).
I also love paper. Especially paper that has my writing on it. Even if that writing is from my sophomore year in high school. (more…)
Here is the 59th installment of Ten Top Lists of What Not to Do. The inspiration for this came from standing in a number of lines Hope you like it.
Top Ten Things Not to do if You Find Yourself Waiting Your Turn
10 If you are in line at a ferry do not turn off your car. If you do, at best the minute you do, the line will start moving. At worst, your car won’t start and the friendly folks behind you will figure out a way to heave your car over the side of the access terminal into thirty feet of water.
9. If you are in line at the pharmacy do not try to horn in on the confidential medical briefing of the person in front of you. If you do, at best you may hear something that your ears won’t forgive. At worst the store…
Randy shifted his weight in the uncomfortable straight-back wooden chair. He was afraid to grasp the handle of the delicate teacup though he was thirsty for the hot tea. Mary and her cousins were quiet, scrolling through their respective Kindles and Kobos for the book they were to discuss that night. Randy didn’t know how he had been pressed into joining their book club. The only reason could be that he had suggested the novel to Mary. Living Life Backwards was an intriguing title he thought, and Peter Wells, the author, was a master of the short story, at least the ones he published through his blog, Counting Ducks. That was another interesting title. People usually count sheep. Or the head of cattle. But he had never known anyone to count ducks. (more…)
