An Open Letter to Congress on the Escalation of War with Venezuela

Here we are again. Anyone who has been paying attention should not be surprised that the Trump regime has invaded and attacked–without provocation and without authorization from Congress–another country. He’s been threatening to do that since he took office. Yet, even I spent most of Saturday in shock.

But today, instead of sitting around and wringing my hands, I called and wrote to my so-called representatives. I don’t expect them to take my concerns seriously. They are members of Trump’s cult, but if I can be a thorn in their side, if I can amplify the disgust so many of us feel toward Congress and the current regime, then I will do my duty.

Here’s what I said and wrote:

I’m writing to express my alarm about the Trump regime’s UNAUTHORIZED military strikes in Venezuela and the dangerous escalation toward an ILLEGAL and UNNECESSARY war. I request that you commit to your constitutionally mandated responsibilities. Here’s a few things you SHOULD do:

  1. Immediately pass a war powers resolution to block all unauthorized strikes or military action in Venezuela (as well as any other countries Trump has been threatening);
  2. Hold public hearings to investigate the legality and justification for the administration’s aggressive use of military force;
  3. Call for the impeachment of Secretary of Defense Hegseth because he has consistently LIED to Congress about the regime’s intentions toward Venezuela;
  4. Demand the resignation of Secretary of State Rubio because he has consistently LIED to Congress about the regime’s intentions toward Venezuela; and
  5. Support articles of IMPEACHMENT and move to CONVICT Trump for this repeated defiance of the law.

Enough is enough! Every day since Trump took office has been filled with one outrageous and illegal crisis (most manufactured by Trump and his cabinet). Voters are sick and tired of being lied to and SICK AND TIRED of Congress not doing what they were elected to do.

DO YOUR JOB. Accept your constitutionally mandated duties and stop the Trump regime from getting the USA bogged down in another forever war!

Many thanks to 5 Calls for the script. I modified it slightly; the capitalization is all mine.

  1. I’m going to copy and paste your version and send it to MY Trumpy representative. Thanks for the kick in the pants.

    I’ve been wringing my hands too for 24 hours, but this is the least we can do. Maybe if enough of us chime in these dunderheads will start to hear us. ✊

  2. Thank you, Marie! I emailed my representatives, who have opposed Trump and this invasion. But I may copy your version to send to others.

    I hope there are some big actions planned. I did see one local one planned for this afternoon, but since we just returned from a small local weekly protest against ICE, it’s a bit too much for one day.

    • Good for you for attending a protest against ICE! And I’d be honored if you used my letter :-) An emergency protest was planned for the Capitol here this afternoon but I didn’t see it until too late. I also hope there will be large coordinated actions. From photos of protests that have already occurred, it looks like some people are dusting off their protest signs from the Iraq invasion.

      • The protest I went to is being held every Sunday, and it’s only about 10 minutes from my house. So, I’m going to try to do that one as often as I can.

        I was happy to see Sen. Booker words in Joyce White’s post today.

    • Thank you, Eileen. While I know my Congressional members are part of his cult, it does make me feel a bit better knowing I took some action. At least they can’t say they didn’t know you cared :-)

  3. Thank you for this, Marie. I just fired off emails to my senators and Congressional reps. They’re all Democrats, but I don’t care. Congress isn’t doing its job; these three people need to do more to make sure Congress does its job. As a legislative body, Congress has failed and betrayed the American people, including me!!

    • Liz, thank you for contacting your Congress members. Indeed, even if you believe they are doing the right thing, they still need to hear from you. In all my discussions with friends, we keep coming back to the same issue: Congress abdicating its responsibilities … and yes, including some Democrats who willingly supported many of tRump’s cabinet nominees like Marco Rubio … ugh!

    • My pleasure, Janis! Yup, I’ve heard that Dems need to hear from us too. At the least those doing the right thing will be bolstered by our support. Although Congress members only want to hear from their constituencies, I have written to several Democrats in other states just to say, “I wish you were my Representative/Senator!” :-)
